The Benefits of Vitamin D and the Mediterranean Diet
Recently Vitamin D has been getting a lot of press for its necessity in our diet for various health benefits. Deficiencies of this nutrient, are becoming an epidemic around the world, resulting in some of the most deadly diseases.
Some of the most serious diseases resulting from lack of Vitamin D are cancers and neurological disorders. Vitamin D can improve a number of brain disorders, including depression and dementia—the most devastating form of which is Alzheimer’s disease. Research also shows that vitamin D has tremendous protective effects against a variety of different cancers, including pancreatic, lung, ovarian, breast, prostate, and skin cancers.
While all of us are aware of its high content of Vitamin D, in milk, there are many other sources of this detrimental nutrient within the Mediterranean Diet. Foods such as salmon, flounder, tuna, yogurt, eggs, and mushrooms are rich in Vitamin D. These foods are all included in Ayhan’s Mediterranean Diet Plan.
