The Mediterranean Diet can help with Sleep Apnea and Belly Fat
Obstructive Sleep Apnea or OSA is caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses during sleep. A study performed in Greece on 40 obese patients with sleep apnea, were put on different diet regimens. Half of the participants were given a prudent diet consisting of one rich in vegetables, fruit, fish and poultry, and low in total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol and sodium. The other twenty participants were given a Mediterranean diet which consists of eating fish and poultry at least twice a week, and limiting red meat to no more than a few times a month, eating fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts, and replacing butter with olive oil and canola oil, using herbs and spices instead of salt and drinking red wine in moderation. Each group was encouraged to engage on physical activity by walking at least 30 minutes per day.
The patients continued to receive CPAP therapy (Continuous positive airway pressure therapy) CPAP machines to help an individual who has obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), breathe more easily during sleep, by increasing the air pressure in the throat so that the airway does not collapse when you breathe in.
The participants were monitored on their activity in the brain, eye movements and snoring. Six months into the study, patients following a Mediterranean diet showed a reduced number of sleep disturbances, or apneas, during REM sleep, which accounts for 25% of total sleep. As an added bonus, these participants had a greater decrease in abdominal fat.
